“By far the busiest carriers at Kansas City Union Station were the Missouri Pacific and the Santa Fe. The Santa Fe had 10 scheduled trains per day passing through the station, and yet another pair originating/terminating here. By June 1970, Santa Fe’s offering had been trimmed considerably, and would end completely in less than a year. On June 5th, Larry Thomas caught a pair of Santa Fe trains preparing to depart Union Station. First is train #211 with U30CG #8004 leading. Larry Thomas

“After passing through Valley Park, the Missouri Pacific follows the Meramec River, crossing it twice before reaching Eureka on the far west end of St Louis County. At Crescent, three Missouri Pacific U30Cs lead a coal train around the curve towards the second crossing of the Meramec on October 11, 1975. The train is bound for the Union Electric power plant at Labadie.” (Paul Dalman)

Located at milepost 110, Rolla was incorporated in 1858, welcomed the Southwest Branch RR in 1860, and was named the seat of Phelps County in 1861. After the passing of an eastbound, GP38-2 #412 leads a westbound freight out of the siding on October 12, 1975, The stucco and red tile roof depot was built in 1928, but sadly was demolished by the Burlington Northern in the mid-1980s. (Paul Dalman)

The selection above from “Rails Around Missouri” is from Chapter Seven: Central Missouri. As we continue our series of what was included in the book and what was not, the shot below is also from Rolla, taken by Daniel Schroeder on September 3, 1978. This shot was not included, but is worth sharing.

Next, we have a pair of Frisco steam shots from Joe Collias, both taken in 1949 in St Louis. The first, with 4-8-4 #4501 on The Meteor, was taken at St Louis Union Station. While the subject is clearly worthy of print, the slide was damaged, and could not be used. Instead, we used the shot below of the 1063  stopped at the Tower Grove station, a few miles west of Union Station.

In “Rails Around Missouri”, one of our final views of the Kansas City Southern in Chapter 4 is from an area south of Noel known as Butler’s Bluff. Both Bob King and Ken Albrecht were on the top of the bluff on October 16, 1982 shooting northbound KCS trains as they entered Missouri from Arkansas. The shot above, by Bob King showing 3 KCS and 2 Burlington Northern SD40-2s on a coal train, was not selected. The shot below by Ken Albrecht, was selected, and was used as a full page spread.  Which shot do you prefer?
