In writing/researching my upcoming book, Rails Around Northern Illinois, I developed a fondness for the then-rural areas northwest of Chicago. Tonight I offer this excerpt from Chapter 7, which covers this corner of northern Illinois: The Soo Line’s depot in Grayslake was on the west side of the mainline north of County Road A27. A northbound work train behind RS3 #373 meets a southbound local behind GP9 #407 at the depot on a July afternoon in 1966. The depot no longer stands today, and a grain and feed sales company is in its place. The Grayslake smokestack is across the tracks behind the photographer. (Terry Norton photo)
