Frigid temps this week have me “firing up the way-back machine” looking back at old slides instead of venturing out to shoot new images. Here are a few from 1987-90 that convey “cold” to me.

First, C&NW SD40-2 leads a Chicago-bound freight past the old Litchfield & Madison engine house in Edwardsville, IL on 12-18-87.

 

Amtrak F40PH #274 @ Kirkwood, MO 11-21-88.

 

Next, CM&W GP38 #2036 heads north through Granite City, IL on 12-29-88.

 

A pair of UP B23-7s drift eastbound down grade through Kirkwood on March 7, 1989.

 

UP SD40-2 #4193 comes to a stop with a Labadie coal train in Dupo, IL on 2-3-90.

 

A few minutes later, a southbound empty coal train passes, led by SD40-2 #3811:
