‘Missouri’ parting shots 5-31-13

Located at milepost 110, Rolla was incorporated in 1858, welcomed the Southwest Branch RR in 1860, and was named the seat of Phelps County in 1861. After the passing of an eastbound, GP38-2 #412 leads a westbound freight out of the siding on October 12, 1975, The stucco and red tile roof depot was built in 1928, but sadly was demolished by the Burlington Northern in the mid-1980s. (Paul Dalman)

The selection above from “Rails Around Missouri” is from Chapter Seven: Central Missouri. As we continue our series of what was included in the book and what was not, the shot below is also from Rolla, taken by Daniel Schroeder on September 3, 1978. This shot was not included, but is worth sharing.

Next, we have a pair of Frisco steam shots from Joe Collias, both taken in 1949 in St Louis. The first, with 4-8-4 #4501 on The Meteor, was taken at St Louis Union Station. While the subject is clearly worthy of print, the slide was damaged, and could not be used. Instead, we used the shot below of the 1063  stopped at the Tower Grove station, a few miles west of Union Station.

“Rails Around Missouri” is a new 224-page hard cover book, with over 500 all-color photos like the ones above. Your copy can be ordered for $47.95 plus shipping, and will come signed by the author. Choose between the KCS or Frisco cover (contents identical).

‘Missouri’ Parting shot 5-24-13

In “Rails Around Missouri”, one of our final views of the Kansas City Southern in Chapter 4 is from an area south of Noel known as Butler’s Bluff. Both Bob King and Ken Albrecht were on the top of the bluff on October 16, 1982 shooting northbound KCS trains as they entered Missouri from Arkansas. The shot above, by Bob King showing 3 KCS and 2 Burlington Northern SD40-2s on a coal train, was not selected. The shot below by Ken Albrecht, was selected, and was used as a full page spread.  Which shot do you prefer?

“I received my copy of The Book today…and didn’t know if I could put it down long enough to send you a note to let you know that I think it is JUST GREAT!!!! Good job.   Thanks for writing it.   I hope that you will sell a ton of them.   I will spread the word.”
-RON KNUDSEN

“Got my copy yesterday, great book!!!  I am very happy with the quality and quantity of photos.  I spent a lot of time back in the mid to late 80’s railfanning around Missouri and this book was great for me in piecing together some of the missing pieces I had seen (torn up and abandoned lines).  I am a big Rock Island fan and had only seen the remains of the line in ’86 and later so seeing some action on the line was great.  Thanks for a great book!!!”
– John A. Yontz

“My copy arrived Wednesday and I foresee many hours of reading and studying pictures. A great job and a very welcome addition to my bookshelf.”  – Robert Brown

“I received your book yesterday and gave it a (quick) read. I am favorably impressed.” – Bob King

“It looks great! Very well done! I like the way it is laid out and I thought you did a good job representing Missouri railroading from  the era(s) you went for.” – Lance Garrels

“I received my copy and WOW, what a book !!!!   I especially enjoyed the coverage of the Katy and Rock Island as I have seen very, very few photos of both routes in our state. Of course, I enjoyed the Frisco and MoPac and ……well, all of it !!!!  It certainly exceeded my expectations and I actually had them set pretty high.” – Bob Plough

Just got done perusing your literary gem of Missouri’s RRs, and what a fine piece of work it is!” – Dick Wallin

“Mike, I have to tell you that book is the nicest train book I have picked up in years. (that is my review) I am 41 so I saw a lot of what is in the book but some was gone before I got into train watching and photography.” Bob Cox, Silver Rails Gallery, LaPlata, MO

‘Missouri’ Parting Shot 5-17-13

With the Rock Island’s 1980 shutdown ending operations over the Rock’s St Louis line, the response to seeing a train on this bridge was very enthusiastic. The most common response we’ve received is “Wow, I’ve never seen a train on that bridge. What an awesome shot!” So with that in mind, here is the first of a series of shots that were not included in “Rails Around Missouri”, yet are worth seeing. Above is a shot of Rock Island train # 73 as it makes its way west across the Gasconade River bridge on February 15, 1975. Photo by Mark Nelson
