‘Missouri’ Parting Shot 5-17-13

With the Rock Island’s 1980 shutdown ending operations over the Rock’s St Louis line, the response to seeing a train on this bridge was very enthusiastic. The most common response we’ve received is “Wow, I’ve never seen a train on that bridge. What an awesome shot!” So with that in mind, here is the first of a series of shots that were not included in “Rails Around Missouri”, yet are worth seeing. Above is a shot of Rock Island train # 73 as it makes its way west across the Gasconade River bridge on February 15, 1975. Photo by Mark Nelson

‘Missouri’ Sneak Peek for 5-3-013

Bevier featured an interchange with a coal-hauling shortline, the Bevier & Southern. This shortline was steam-powered into the 1960s, and utilized the former CB&Q water tank located on the south side of the CB&Q mainline. In a timeless scene, the B&S crew is busy lubricating, inspecting and watering 2-6-0 #112 in preparation for the morning run to the mine at Binkley on October 15, 1962. (Tom Gildersleeve)

‘Missouri’ Sneak Peek for 4-26-12

Around the curve west of Crescent is the Frisco’s second crossing of the Meramec River near Eureka on this deck & truss bridge. The line through here was once double-track, evidenced by the wide piers as four GP40-2s lead a freight west across the bridge on June 7, 1980. (Paul Dalman) -Editor’s note: as of this web posting the river is flooding and is only 10′ below the bottomm of the bridge.

‘Missouri’ Sneak Peek for 4-19-13

At one time, the Moberly branch was actually the MKT mainline to Hannibal. The railroad had a goal of reaching Chicago, and at Hannibal it could connect to the CB&Q. Meanwhile, the Wabash obtained trackage rights over the Moberly-Hannibal segment, and eventually purchased it outright from the Katy in the 1940s, while the Katy retained service to Moberly as a branch. Extra 113 North is seen here in September 1971 as it arrives in Moberly, and then switches the interchange track not far from the N&W Moberly depot. (Leon Sapp)
